A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT ST. TAMMANY PARISH
GOVERNMENT'S APPLICATION FOR ASSISTANCE FROM THE
U. S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE NORTH AMERICAN
WETLANDS CONSERVATION FUND FOR THE PURPOSE OF
CONSERVING WETLANDS.
WHEREAS, increasing development in St. Tammany Parish (STP) has fragmented wildlife
habitat and strained the stormwater drainage system of Bayou Liberty.
WHEREAS, loss of infiltration areas in undeveloped parcels has increased the amount of
runoff to Bayou Liberty and reduced its water quality.
WHEREAS, STP is committed to acquiring prime wetlands wildlife habitat in the Bayou
Liberty watershed as evidenced by the acquisition of Camp Salmen and the Stone property.
WHEREAS, wetlands and buffering uplands can be preserved through acquisition of land
along key watershed drainage systems.
WHEREAS, this additional habitat will provide connectivity for wetlands species from the
uplands in the north of the Parish to the protected marshes on the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain.
WHEREAS, expansion and/or preservation of a natural overbank area improves stormwater
management and reduces risk of flooding to communities in the Bayou Liberty Watershed.
WHEREAS, this grant will enable STP to acquire undeveloped wetlands along Bayou Liberty
from willing sellers and connect the preserved habitat, such as Camp Salmen and the Stone property,
that it has previously acquired.
THE PARISH OF ST. TAMMANY HEREBY RESOLVES to support STP's application for
$1,000,000 in assistance from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service's North American Wetlands
Conservation Fund.
